SAN JOSE, Antique – Flashfloods threaten an elementary school located near the Dalanas River in San Antonio, Barbaza, Antique.
The school’s officials said continuous rain may trigger a flashflood and destroy their remaining building.
A flashflood had earlier destroyed a school room. A large portion of the land where the building stands was also eaten up by the Dalanas River.
On Tuesday, the teachers and students were surprised when the river’s water level suddenly rose up.
Adeligo Espago Jr., teacher-in-charge, said a large portion of the land where their school building stands was eroded by the raging waters of the river.
Espago said their remaining school building may follow the fate of the building that was destroyed during the onslaught of Typhoon “Frank” last year.
He said they built an improvised blockade made of bamboo and rocks to divert the flow of the water with the help of barangay officials.
But he said, the blockade is only temporary and will be washed away once the water level rises.
Espago said houses located near the river bank are also being threatened by the flashflood.
The municipal government of Barbaza had advised the residents to vacate the area due to the dangers posed by the Dalanas River.
It bought a parcel of land in Brgy. Palma as relocation site of the affected residents but only few had transferred.
The more than 200 residents are adamant to relocate since they get their means of livelihood from the area.
